New Researcher Guidebook Facilitates Partnerships with Industry

The University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP) has announced the release of The Researcher Guidebook: A Guide for Successful Institutional-Industry Collaborations. This practical manual is designed to foster successful collaborations among active researchers in academia, government labs, and industry. The Guidebook helps individual researchers learn about the unique challenges and opportunities that may arise as they move promising technologies out of the laboratory and into the marketplace.

The guide is divided into two parts: section one addresses issues specific to university, non-profit, and government researchers and section two addresses issues specific to industry researchers. By presenting these two different perspectives, the Guidebook enables researchers from institutions and industry to gain an understanding of the ways their processes, practices, and philosophies overlap and diverge in important ways.

The Guidebook identifies the key issues critical for developing successful collaborations and provides practical advice on the following topics:

  • Managing expectations
  • Benefits and challenges of collaboration
  • Establishing contacts
  • Developing proposals
  • Budgeting
  • Managing compliance
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Consulting
  • Protecting intellectual property
  • Creating long-term relationships

The Researcher Guidebook was prepared by a working group of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP). UIDP is an organization of universities and companies who seek to build stronger university-industry relationships. Members of the Researcher Guidebook working group represent a range of universities, companies, non-profit organizations, and the federal government. The Researcher Guidebook was developed with support from the National Science Foundation and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

The Georgia Tech Research Corporation is pleased to host the pre-publication release of The Researcher Guidebook. It will provide a valuable resource as Georgia Tech researchers pursue commercial development of their significant discoveries and innovations.
